Diastasis recti is a disorder in which the rectus abdominis separates from the linea albia, resulting in a ventral hernia. This condition occurs most commonly in pregnant women because the enlarged uterus places stress on the abdominal wall. Furthermore, hormones associated with pregnancy relax the surrounding fascia which increases the risk of separation between the muscle and connective tissue. This condition can also occur in men due to aging, weight fluctuations, weight lifting, or other circumstances that result in high pressure within the abdominal wall.
