Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Pelvic floor dysfunction refers to failure of the pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor prolapse and urinary incontinence are two examples of pelvic floor dysfunction that result when the pelvic muscles are too relaxed. Additionally, problems can arise when pelvic floor muscles are chronically contracted, known as nonrelaxing pelvic floor dysfunction. In this condition, an individual will experience pain or discomfort when defecating, urinating, and during sexual interaction. Nonrelaxing pelvic floor dysfunction can develop from voluntary holding of urine or stool or by injury to the pelvic floor. In all cases of pelvic floor dysfunction, therapy is recommended to work or relax the muscles of the pelvic floor and to strengthen the abdomen.
