This online continuing education course is designed for the pelvic rehab therapist and provides a thorough introduction to the physiology of the lactating breast, dysfunction and treatment interventions, and the physical therapist’s role in breastfeeding and pumping support.
Participants will learn to assess and treat breast inflammation and pain such as mastitis, blocked ducts, milk blebs, and cracked nipples. Lectures will be delivered with a combination of asynchronous and live formats. Participants will receive several hours of recordings prior to the course start date and will be expected to complete the asynchronous lectures independently.
Special Considerations:
This course includes non-internal lab work on breast tissue. Participants may practice manual techniques on themselves or on another individual in their locale. It is the responsibility of each course participant to protect the safety of lab partners if they are recruited, including the use of infection control practices and obtaining informed consent. Pregnant and lactating individuals are welcome to register, as are those without breasts.
PLEASE NOTE: This course includes breast assessment and exam techniques, and the discussion of topics that may be linked to a participant’s personal experiences. Topics include systemic discrimination, medical trauma, breast cancer, and others. H&W strives to foster an environment that is safe and supportive. Survivors of past trauma should be aware that performing or experiencing a breast exam or discussing certain topics may be triggering, and that many, regardless of their histories, feel strong emotions in relation to some course content. In order to foster an environment that is non-triggering and safe for all participants, we recommend all participants consider the emotional impact they may experience during the course and consider consulting a trauma counselor or therapist prior to attending.
Audience:
This continuing education course is targeted to the pelvic health physical therapist. Non-pelvic physical therapists are welcome to register bearing in mind that some concepts may require additional reading and preparation.

Attending a remote course is easy and safe, and you can do it entirely from the security and comfort of your own home or clinic without having to find a lab partner.
Important thing to note:
- Our policy for applying for continuing education credit for remote courses differs from that of our in-person and satellite lab courses. Read the specific language of the policy here. Depending on the state in which you practice, you may need to submit your own application to your state board or approving body should you wish that it be approved for continuing education credit in your state.
- To attend a remote Herman & Wallace course, registrants will need Zoom video conferencing software. This is a requirement. One can create an account and download the software to their computer at https://zoom.us/
- We use the Pacific Time Zone for all of our remote course start and end times (this is not the case for in-person and satellite lab locations). Please make a note of this and set your calendar accordingly.
- A Zoom account is free to create. Before the meeting, we recommend having a practice Zoom session with a friend or colleague so you can test your microphone, video, and internet connection. You can participate in any remote course from the comfort of your home, but will need a stable internet connection in order to participate. We recommend downloading the software and practicing a call with a friend or colleague prior to your course with us. Zoom also offers video tutorials on their website at https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/206618765-Zoom-Video-Tutorials.

This course will also cover when to refer to other health professionals so that the participant will be able to clearly communicate the role of physical therapy during lactation.
Evidence-based assessment and treatment techniques will be emphasized. Lecture topics will include the anatomy and physiology of lactation, blocked ducts and mastitis, and breast pain through a biopsychosocial lens. During labs, participants will have the opportunity to systematically assess the breast and practice therapeutic breast massage and manual milk expression.
Prerequisites:
All pre-recorded lectures in Teachable for this course must be watched before the Live Component of the course. See the Schedule tab for the current list of pre-recorded videos
Upon completion of this continuing education course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the physical therapist’s role in breastfeeding support
- Discuss the physiology and anatomy of the lactating breast
- Demonstrate clinical reasoning skills for the assessment of breast inflammation and nipple pain
- Demonstrate a physical therapy evaluation of the lactating breast
- Review clinical guidelines for mastitis and breast pain
- Establish an evidence-based, individualized treatment plan for breast conditions
