Peter Philip, PT, ScD, COMT is a two- time graduate of Quinnipiac University; in 1996 with a bachelors in Physical Therapy and in 1999 with a Masters in Orthopedic Physical Therapy, and his doctorate from Texas Tech University’s Doctor of Science program where he enhanced and confirmed his independent research on pelvic pain, non-surgical orthopaedic medicine and teaching.
Peter has dedicated his life’s work to the eradication of pain and dysfunction. He treats both chronic and acute conditions, and bases his success on an integration of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and pathoanatomy.
Since 1997, Peter Philip has been the owner/director of Philip Physical Therapy, which is currently located in New Canaan, Connecticut. After initiating his private practice out of his truck with a reflex hammer and folding table, he is grateful to have an office space from which to work, as driving 1,000 miles a week had become quite taxing.
Peter has been treating patients with pelvic dysfunction, pelvic pain and bladder/bowel dysfunctions since 2001. He incorporates sound differential diagnostics and treatment strategies that address the spine, pelvis, sacroiliac joints, hips and pelvic anatomy. In 2010, he was acknowledged by the International Association of Orthopedic Medicine (IAOM) as a leader in the field of nonsurgical medicine, and was certified as an orthopedic manual therapist (COMT); The 2nd in the East Coast, and 1st in the Tri-State and New England regions. In April of 2014, Peter was one of eighteen to successfully complete and receive recognition as a Pelvic Rehabilitation Practitioner (PRPC), and the first male nationally to receive this certification and recognition.
Peter was mentored by Dr. Russell Woodman and has taught nationally since 1995 on topics that range from pelvic pain, spine (cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral), hip, shoulder, knee and ankle. Peter developed and teaches Differential Diagnostics of Chronic Pelvic Pain and Differential Diagnosis of the Sacroiliac Joint through Herman & Wallace.

Contact Hours: 20According to Hoppenfeld in his text on Physical Examination of the Spine & Extremities, accurate diagnosis depends on knowledge of functional anatomy, diligent observation, and a thorough examination. For the patient who presents with chronic pelvic pain, it is common to report pain and dysfunction in multiple body segments such as the spine, pelvis and hips. This continuing education course prepares the participant to apply differential diagnostic skills for chronic pelvic pain, allowing for more accurate intervention strategies that are directed to specific tissues.
Through multiple anatomy lectures and detailed palpation labs, a therapist's ability to "know exactly where you are" is enhanced through this class. And while knowledge of anatomy and skills in examination are critical in finding the source of a patient's pain, the influence of the nervous system must be considered for its impact on a patient's presentation. The influence of the nervous system on pain is learned in this course through study of the somatic and autonomic nervous system anatomy, function, and relationship to the pelvis. A therapist will learn systematic methods for examination of the joints, muscles, fascia, and nervous system and will be given tools to record findings of specific assessments.
The concepts instructed in this course are designed to be easily integrated into a therapist's current evaluation and intervention strategies. Foundational instruction includes an emphasis on embryology so that referred pain patterns are best understood. Sufficient lab opportunities are provided to allow the participant to practice the material that is demonstrated. Both external and internal pelvic muscle examination and treatment techniques will be included, with an emphasis on specific palpation and testing to allow the clinician to accurately identify sources of dysfunction. The course information is applicable to the patient who presents with pain as a primary complaint, as well as the patient suffering from both surgical and non-surgical voiding disorders.
Special Considerations:
As this continuing education course includes extensive lab work, all course attendees should come prepared to participate as both clinician and patient. Internal (vaginal) pelvic floor muscle examinations will be taught in labs.
Audience:
This continuing education seminar is targeted to physical therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapist assistants, registered nurses, nurse midwives, and other rehabilitation professionals. Content is not intended for use outside the scope of the learner's license or regulation. Physical therapy continuing education courses should not be taken by individuals who are not licensed or otherwise regulated, except, as they are involved in a specific plan of care.
Prerequisites:
It is required that the participants have a working experience with evaluating and treating patients with pelvic pain inclusive of vaginal examination. Pelvic Floor Level 1, through Herman & Wallace or Pelvic PT 1 through the APTA is strongly recommended

Price: $625 (Early Registrant Price $600)
Experience Level: Intermediate

Contact Hours: 20According to Hoppenfeld in his text on Physical Examination of the Spine & Extremities, accurate diagnosis depends on knowledge of functional anatomy, diligent observation, and a thorough examination.

Explain the value of differential diagnosis in identifying structures at fault in chronic pelvic pain presentations.Peter Philip, PT, ScD, COMT, PRPCPeter Philip, PT, ScD, COMT is a two- time graduate of Quinnipiac University; in 1996 with a bachelors in Physical Therapy and in 1999 with a Masters in Orthopedic Physical Therapy, and his doctorate from Texas Tech University’s Doctor of Science program where he enhanced and confirmed his independent research on pelvic pain, non-surgical orthopaedic medicine and teaching.

Price: $475 (Early Registrant Price $450)

Contact Hours: 15Sacroiliac joint pain prevalence has been estimated to be as high as 30% in patients with low back and buttock pain. (Schwarzer et al., 1995) Local causes of sacroiliac joint pain can be created from the joint itself, the dense ligaments that cover the joint surfaces, surrounding muscles, or nerves. Pain in the sacroiliac region can also be referred from the low back, buttock muscles, abdominal organs, or the hips. The SI joint is frequently injured by a fall or trauma, and is at increased risk of dysfunction during pregnancy and postpartum. One in four women who have pelvic girdle pain (PGP) during pregnancy may develop chronic postpartum PGP. (Ostgaard, 1991)
This two-day course will present a reference-based, clinically applicable approach to the evaluation and treatment of the sacroiliac joint and pelvic ring. Pain in the lumbopelvic-hip complex can be challenging as there are many potential sources of biomechanical dysfunction and pain generation. The course will cover the direct and indirect anatomy that influences the sacroiliac joint, and provide a means of deducing the source of pain and dysfunction. Direct treatment of symptoms and techniques for symptom amelioration will be presented. During lecture and laboratory sessions, participants will have the opportunity to practice two different SIJ tests; movement impairment vs. symptom reproduction. The participants will also analyze which spinal joints may be referring pain, and assess the role that sacral discs play in initiating and perpetuating pain. The information presented is immediately applicable to the clinician's patient population and the techniques presented will be able to be incorporated seamlessly into the participant’s clinical practice.
An emphasis on specific exercise and stabilization approaches will be instructed throughout the course. As research by Hungerford et al (2003) has pointed out that patients who have sacroiliac joint pain have altered patterns of muscle recruitment that may affect load transfer strategies, movement re-training, muscle awareness training, and muscle activation strategies will be instructed for both clinical application and home program management..

Peter Philip, PT, ScD, COMT, PRPCPeter Philip, PT, ScD, COMT is a two- time graduate of Quinnipiac University; in 1996 with a bachelors in Physical Therapy and in 1999 with a Masters in Orthopedic Physical Therapy, and his doctorate from Texas Tech University’s Doctor of Science program where he enhanced and confirmed his independent research on pelvic pain, non-surgical orthopaedic medicine and teaching.

Price: $475 (Early Registrant Price $450)
Experience Level: Beginner
Prerequisites: None
Required Readings: This course has no required readings, but a practitioner who is new to pelvic rehabilitation may find it useful to renew the anatomy and physiology of the pelvic floor/pelvic girdle prior to the course.
Lab Attire: Comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Course attendees will be participating in labs as both practitioner and practice patient. There is no internal evaluation in this course.
What to bring: Mobilization Belt, Yoga Mat, Foam Roller

Price: $475 (Early Registrant Price $450)
Experience Level: Beginner

6. Instruct patients on a series of SIJ- specific stabilization exercises.
7. Design a plan of care specific to a patient's dysfunction.Peter Philip, PT, ScD, COMT, PRPCPeter Philip, PT, ScD, COMT is a two- time graduate of Quinnipiac University; in 1996 with a bachelors in Physical Therapy and in 1999 with a Masters in Orthopedic Physical Therapy, and his doctorate from Texas Tech University’s Doctor of Science program where he enhanced and confirmed his independent research on pelvic pain, non-surgical orthopaedic medicine and teaching.

Price: $475 (Early Registrant Price $450)
Experience Level: Beginner
Audience:
This continuing education seminar is targeted to physical therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapist assistants, registered nurses, nurse midwives, and other rehabilitation professionals.
